Women in Black Vigil

Last Friday, I attended a Women in Black vigil in downtown Jerusalem and
spent about an hour getting to know the women who come every week to protest
the occupation. They come donned in black to “symbolize the suffering and
tragedy of both the Israeli and Palestinian people,” but also wear smiles
and are happy to chat with passers-by. Every Friday, for 24 years, they have
come to Hagar Square to raise their signs: cardboard cutouts of a black hand
with white lettering that read ‘Stop the Occupation,’ and black banners with
translations in Hebrew, Arabic, and English. They are a mixture of Israelis
and expats who have made Jerusalem their home. Some are Jewish, some are
not.

For a few months now, they have been joined by counter-protesters across the
street. They are all men, and come with large Israeli flags and signs
declaring their support for the IDF and the government. The pro-government
group usually receives nothing but enthusiastic honks and cheers, while the
Women in Black endure glares, taunts, arguments, and worse every week. But
this doesn’t faze any of them. Without fail, they will arrive at 1pm, calmly
and courageously stand up for their beliefs, then head home at 2pm to
farewells of Shabbat Shalom and wishes for a good week.

Vigie de Femmes en Noir

Vendredi dernier, j’ai participé à la vigie des Femmes en Noir au centre de
Jérusalem et j’ai passé à peu près une heure à rencontrer les femmes qui
viennent chaque semaine pour protester contre l’occupation. Elles viennent
en noir pour « symboliser la souffrance et la tragédie à la fois des
Israéliens et des Palestiniens, » mais elles sont aussi souriantes et sont
heureuses  de parler avec des passants. Chaque vendredi, depuis 24 ans,
elles sont venues au Square Hagar pour dresser leurs messages : sur des
panneaux noirs avec des lettres blanches où on peut lire « Stop à
l’Occupation » et des calicots noirs avec des traductions en hébreu, arabe
et anglais. Elles sont un mélange d’Israéliennes et d’expatriés qui ont fait
de Jérusalem leur foyer. Certaines sont juives, d’autres pas.

Depuis quelques mois elles ont été rejointes par des contre-manifestants
dans la rue en face. Ce sont tous des hommes, et ils viennent avec de grands
drapeaux israéliens et des panneaux exprimant leur soutien aux FDI et au
gouvernement. Le groupe pro-gouvernement ne reçoit que des acclamations
enthousiastes, alors que les Femmes en Noir subissent des regards irrités,
des injures, des disputes, qui empirent chaque semaine. Mais cela ne trouble
( ??? faze) aucune d’elles. A coup sûr, elles arriveront à 13h, se tiendront
là calmement et courageusement pour leurs convictions, ensuite rentreront
chez elles à 14h avec les adieux de Shabbat Shalom et des vœux de bonne
semaine.

The international movement of Women in Black began in Jerusalem in January
1988 and chapters have since formed in many countries for a variety of
issues, from Mafia violence to inter-ethnic cooperation. The Women in Black
movement in Israel won the Aschen Peace Prize (1991), the peace award of the
city of San Giovanni d’Asso in Italy (1994), and the Jewish Peace
Fellowship’s “Peacemaker Award” (2001). In 2001, the international movement
of Women in Black was honored with the Millennium Peace Prize for Women,
awarded by the United Nations Development Fund for women (UNIFEM).

Le mouvement international des Femmes en Noir a débuté en janvier 1988 et
des émules se sont formées depuis dans beaucoup de pays sur des questions
variées, de la violence de la mafia à la coopération inter-ethnique. Le
mouvement des Femmes en Noir en Israël a gagné le Prix Aschen (1991), le
Prix de la paix de la ville de San Giovanni d’Asso en Italie (1994) et le
Prix de construction de la paix de la Communauté juive pour la paix (2001).
En 2001, le mouvement international des Femmes en Noir a été honoré par le
prix de la paix du Millenium pour les femmes, accordé par le Fonds de
développement des nations Unies pour les femmes (UNIFEM)
