[Agroecologia] Los transgénicos de BASF abandonan Europa

Una pequeña victoria para la causa.
La multinacional química BASF, la de la patata transgénica Amflora, ha anunciado que cesa todas las actividades de su filial de biotecnología agrícola, BASF Plant Sciences, dirigidas al mercado europeo. Se lleva
estas actividades a EEUU, ante la "aversión de los alemanes a los transgénicos". Reconocen que la mayoritaria oposición de los consumidores, agricultores y políticos europeos hacen que no tenga sentido mantener el negocio de las semillas transgénicas en Europa.

FRANKFURT Jan 14 (Reuters) - 
BASF may move the headquarters of BPS, its
plant science unit, to the United States because of Germany's aversion
to genetic engineering, weekly paper Wirtschafts Woche said in an advance copy of its Monday edition.
The headquarters of the unit, which developed the Amflora genetically modified potato, could move to The Research Triangle Park in North
Carolina, from Limburgerhof, the paper said, without citing sources.
A decision is expected to be made by the board of the German chemical company this month, Wirtschafts Woche added.
BPS will reduce the headcount at the Gatersleben and Limburgerhof sites to around 750 from 839 staff, the paper said. Around 100 jobs are likely
to be added in Gent, Belgium, the United States, and in Berlin, Wirtschaftswoche said.

WirtschaftsWoche (BusinessWeek) the german chemical giant BASF Group is
to relocate the headquarters of its activities in the field of plant biotechnology to the United States. "We won't bemoan the loss of this
business a single tear."
"Subject to confirmation by the Group, we embrace the announcement of
BASF chief Bock, to move the headquarters of the subsidiary BASF Plant Science to the U.S. explicitly", said Christof Potthof, staff of the german group Gen-ethical Network in Berlin. "We evaluate the decision as an admission of defeat. For years the so-called green genetic engineering in Europe is fought by the German and European civil society. A broad coalition of farmers, environmental and consumer-run groups and activists in local initiatives is campaigning for GMO-free agriculture and food."
Potthof continues: "Nevertheless, we are not under the illusion that BASF would lay down their activities in this area. BASF will not step
back from the announcements of the past to bring more transgenic varieties on the market, in addition to - so far flopped - genetically modified potato Amflora. Genetically modified crops have the charm that they can be patented - the BASF knows from chemistry, and the group obviously likes it. The group has brought itsef in recent years to the top at the list of plant patents.

*Concentration, privatization and integration*
BASF is pursuing its business plan, to set its industrial stamp on the future agricultural production: concentration of economic power, privatization of resources and integration of economic sectors. - for the BASF group /biotechnology/ and in this specific /plant biotechnology/, will play a central role in the future.

(Berlin, 15. Januar 2012) Einem Bericht der Wirtschaftswoche zufolge plant der BASF-Konzern, die Zentrale seiner Aktivitäten im Bereich der Pflanzen-Biotechnologie in die USA zu verlagern. „Wir werden diesem
Geschäftszweig keine Träne hinterher weinen.?
„Vorbehaltlich der Bestätigung durch den Konzern, begrüßen wir die Ankündigung von BASF-Vorstand Bock, die Zentrale der Konzerntochter BASF Plant Science in die USA zu verlegen, ausdrücklich?, so Christof
Potthof, Mitarbeiter des Gen-ethischen Netzwerk in Berlin. „Wir werten die Entscheidung als Eingeständnis einer Niederlage gegen die deutsche
und die europäische Zivilgesellschaft. Seit Jahren wird die so genannte
Grüne Gentechnik in Europa bekämpft. Eine breite Koalition aus Bäuerinnen und Bauern, Umwelt- und VerbraucherschützerInnen und
AktivistInnen in lokalen Initiativen ist für Gentechnikfreiheit von
Landwirtschaft und Lebensmitteln auf der Straße.?

die BASF würde die Aktivitäten in diesem Bereich ruhen lassen. Von den Ankündigungen der Vergangenheit, neben der - bisher gefloppten gentechnisch veränderten Amflora-Kartoffel auch weitere transgene Sorten
auf den Markt bringen zu wollen, wird der Konzern sicher nicht abrücken. 
Gentechnisch veränderte Pflanzen haben den Charme, dass sie patentiert werden können - das kennt die BASF aus der Chemie, und das gefällt ihr offensichtlich. Der Konzern hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren an die Spitze bei den Pflanzen-Patenten gearbeitet.
*Konzentration, Privatisierung und Integration*
Die BASF verfolgt den Plan, der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion der Zukunft ihren industriellen Stempel aufzudrücken: Konzentration von wirtschaftlicher Macht, Privatisierung der Ressourcen und Integration der wirtschaftlichen Bereiche - die Biotechnologie und hier speziell die Pflanzen-Biotechnologie wird für die BASF auch in Zukunft eine zentrale Rolle spielen.
