Estoy leyendo los correos y veo que este nos dice que Gila y su

pero que la situación es dramática; comentan la tensión que se vive
allí.
Hi all,

Thank you for all your words of support. It wonderfully helps
break down
the isolation.

Judy’s work colleagues were found safe and sound, nowhere near
the mall.
I’m sure there will be UN people among the hostages – there have
been
plenty among the wounded. (Nairobi is a hub of UN
organizations.) The
names of those killed were not yet announced, but I expect we
will not
know any of them. Too new in Nairobi.

We are at home glued to the TV, tensely waiting for the assault
of the
commando forces, which surely must come soon. The commandos have
been
inside the mall since yesterday evening. So far, the government
reports
59 dead and 175 wounded, estimating “at least” 30 more hostages
inside
and 10-15 “attackers”. They stopped calling them “gunmen” since
they
learned there is at least one woman among the terrorists.

I think virtually everything is closed down in Nairobi. Usually
Sunday is
a full working day (except for offices). Last night we went to
the
neighborhood hospital for Judy to give blood, meeting another
couple
there for the same purpose, but they were not accepting blood,
and
directed us to hospitals in the center of town. We decided not
to go,
following instructions of both the US Embassy and the UN to stay
home.
The UN is closed except for volunteers working around the clock,
but they
told us they don’t need other volunteers.

Judy and I took a walk this morning in the forest near our
neighborhood
(truthfully, we only walked up to the forest and back, which
alone was 5
km and beautiful). We saw that security was toughened
everywhere, and the
few people out (mostly security guards) huddled in small groups,
speaking
in hushed tones. We asked directions of one, but he just wanted
to talk
about the hostages and how awful it was. “All we can do now is
pray”, he
said. It’s a country with lots of praying. The largest
supermarket chain
(Nakumatt) is holding prayers in its stores throughout the
country today
(except for Nairobi, where stores are closed.)

Do you remember that horrible expression in Israel, “You’re not
a real
Israeli until you live through a war here”? I can’t say I’m a
real Kenyan
now, but I surely cry with other Kenyans for those harmed,
especially the
ones sitting on the floor of the mall right now, waiting for the
terrorists to open fire on them because they have nothing to
lose.

Love and hugs to all from us both.
You can see Judy's brief report below.

Judy and I are watching whatever they are showing on TV. It is
horridly
reminiscent of the bad old days in Israel. Now watching scenes
of the
cafe where we had lunch not too long ago.

We'll go out soon and Judy will give blood. All malls and
public
buildings shut down. The trauma is so great everywhere. No one
used to
this. There are reports that the gunmen released any hostages
who are
Muslim, but kept the others. Estimates of dozens of hostages.

What a bad way to get to world peace.
Love, more love,
Dear All,

You may have heard about a terrorist attack underway in a mall
in
Nairobi.

This is to let you know that Gila and I are safe & sound in
our
Nairobi apartment. We can hear a lot of helicopter activity. Two
of my
colleagues were there, but escaped. Two are still unaccounted
for.

Love,
