Comme conseillère de rédaction et de l’armée avec la Résistance, j’ai vu des
photos atroces comparables, ramenées par des anciens combattants du Vietnam,
& je ne doute pas que des atrocités semblables ont eu lieu dans tout conflit
armé dans lequel les US ont été engagés (& dans ceux financés, entraînés et
armés par les US), au moins depuis les années 1960. Des nations malades font
des choses malades, y compris l’emprisonnement et la torture de ceux qui
dénoncent comme Bradley Manning qui a essayé d’amener à la lumière des
crimes semblables. Si j’entends encore un seul gouvernement glorifier
officiellement la soi-disant « ouverture et transparence, » Je vais

Ces photos déguelasses et qui brisent le cœur publiées la semaine dernière
dans les médias allemands, et plus récemment dans Rolling Stone Magazine  [

apportent enfin la macabre vérité sur la guerre en Afghanistan à un public
plus large.

Toutes les relations au public au sujet de cette guerre concernant la
démocratie et les droits humains s’évaporent avec les photos de soldats
américains posant avec des corps morts et mutilés d’innocents civils
afghans.

Je me dois de rapporter que les Afghans ne croient pas qu’il s’agit d’une
histoire de quelques soldats voyous. Nous croyons que les actions brutales
de ces « équipes de tueurs » révèlent l’agression et le racisme qui font
partie intégrante de l’occupation militaire toute entière. Alors que ces
photos sont nouvelles, le meurtre d’innocents ne l’est pas De semblables
crimes ont suscité beaucoup de protestations en Afghanistan et ont augmenté
fortement le sentiment anti-américain parmi les Afghans ordinaires.

Je ne suis pas surprise que les médias courants aux US aient été réticents à
publier ces images de soldats qui font du meurtre d’Afghans, un sport. On
dit que le  Général Petraeus, actuellement en charge de l’occupation
américaine attache une grande importance à  « l’information sur la guerre »
pour l’opinion publique et qu’il y a un effort concerté pour ne pas montrer
la réalité en Afghanistan aux US.

La semaine dernière, ma première demande pour un visa d’entrée aux US a été
refusée et ainsi ma tournée pour mon livre a été retardée, tandis que des
supporters exigeaient mon droit d’entrer dans le pays. Le gouvernement
américain a été poussé à revenir sur sa décision et à permettre que ma
visite se poursuive. Finalement, cela aussi sera incapable de bloquer la
vérité sur la guerre en Afghanistan.

Les images de « l’équipe de tueurs » produira un choc chez beaucoup
d’extérieurs à l’Afghanistan, mais pas pour nous. Nous avons vu
d’innombrables incidents de forces américaines et de l’OTAN tuant des
innocents comme des oiseaux. .Par exemple, ils viennent de tuer récemment
neuf enfants dans la province de Kunar qui ramassaient du bois pour le feu.
En février, cette année, ils ont tué 65 villageois innocents, la plupart des
femmes et des enfants. Dans ce cas, comme dans beaucoup d’autres, l’OTAN a
prétendu qu’il n’avait tué que des insurgés même si les autorités locales
avaient reconnu que les victimes étaient des civils. Pour éviter que les
faits ne soient connus, il a même arrêté deux journalistes de al-Jazeera qui
essayaient de venir et de rapporter à partir du lieu du massacre.

Les autorités US successives ont dit qu’elles sauvegarderaient les civils et
qu’elles seront plus prudentes, mais en réalité elles sont surtout plus
prudentes dans leurs efforts pour dissimuler leurs crimes et pour éviter
q’ils soient rapportés. Les US et l’OTAN avec le bureau de la mission
d’assistance de l’ONU à l’Afghanistan donnent généralement des statistiques
sur les décès civils qui sous-estiment leur nombre. En réalité, la
soi-disant colère ( ???surge) du Président Obama a seulement eu pour effet
un mouvement de violence de tous les côtés, et les morts civiles ont
augmenté.

Les armées d’occupation ont essayé d’acheter les familles de leurs victimes
en leur offrant à chacune $2000 pour chaque tué. La vie d’un Afghan est bon
marché pour les US et l’OTAN, mais peu importe combien ils offrent, nous ne
voulons pas de leur argent sanglant.

Une fois qu’on sait tout cela et qu’on a vu les photos de « l’équipe de
tueurs » on comprend plus clairement pourquoi les Afghans se sont retournés
contre l’occupation. Le régime Karzaï est plus détesté que jamais, il ne
gouverne que par intimidation, corruption et avec l’aide des armées
d’occupation. Les Afghans méritent beaucoup mieux que cela.

Cependant, cela ne signifie pas que davantage d’Afghans soutiennent la
soi-disant résistance des Talibans réactionnaires. On assiste au contraire à
la croissance, dans des conditions très difficiles, d’une autre résistance
dirigée par des étudiants, des femmes et les gens ordinaires pauvres
d’Afghanistan. Ils descendent dans la rue pour manifester contre le massacre
de civils et pour exiger la fin de la guerre. Des manifestations pareilles
ont eu lieu récemment à  Kaboul, Marzar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad et Farah.

Cette résistance s’inspire de mouvements dans d’autres pays comme l’Egypte
et la Tunisie – nous aussi nous voulons voir le « pouvoir du peuple » en
Afghanistan. Et nous avons besoin du soutien et de la solidarité des gens
des pays de l’OTAN.

Beaucoup de voix nouvelles s’expriment contre cette guerre coûteuse et
hypocrite en Afghanistan, y compris des soldats des armées de l’OTAN. Quand
j’ai visité la dernière fois le RU, j’ai eu l’honneur de rencontrer Joe
Glenton, un objecteur de conscience qui a passé des mois en prison pour sa
résistance contre la guerre en Afghanistan. De sa période en prison, Glenton
dit : « Dans le climat actuel, je considère comme un honneur d’avoir été
condamné à la prison ».

Ainsi, pendant que le monde regarde avec horreur les photos de « l’équipe de
tueurs, le courage et l’humanité de Joe Glenton sont un rappel important que
la guerre en Afghanistan ne doit pas durer pour toujours.

As a draft and military counselor with the Resistance, I saw comparably
atrocious photos brought back by Vietnam vets, & I don't doubt that similar
atrocities have taken place in every armed conflict in which the U.S. has
been engaged (& those funded, trained & armed by the U.S.), at least since
the 1960s. Sick nations do sick things, including imprisonment & torture of
whistleblowers such as Bradley Manning who try to bring such crimes to
light. If I hear one more government official laud so-called "openness &
transparency," I will puke! Call this place the United Sicknesses of
America.

The disgusting and heartbreaking photos published last week in the German
media, and more recently in

are finally bringing the grisly truth about the war in
<http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/afghanistan> Afghanistan to a wider public.
All the PR about this war being about democracy and human rights melts into
thin air with the pictures of US soldiers posing with the dead and mutilated
bodies of innocent Afghan civilians.

I must report that Afghans do not believe this to be a story of a few rogue
soldiers. We believe that the brutal actions of these "kill teams" reveal
the aggression and racism which is part and parcel of the entire military
occupation. While these photos are new, the murder of innocents is not. Such
crimes have sparked many protests in Afghanistan and have sharply raised
anti-American sentiment among ordinary Afghans.

I am not surprised that the mainstream media in the US has been reluctant to
publish these images of the soldiers who made sport out of murdering
Afghans. General Petraeus, now in charge of the American-led occupation, is
said to place great importance on the "information war" for public opinion –
and there is a concerted effort to keep the reality of Afghanistan out of
sight in the US.

Last week my initial application for a US entry visa was turned down, and so
my book tour was delayed while supporters demanded my right to enter the
country. The American government was pressed to relent and allow my visit to
go ahead. Ultimately it too will be unable to block out the truth about the
war in Afghanistan.

The "kill team" images will come as a shock to many outside Afghanistan but
not to us. We have seen countless incidents of American and Nato forces
killing innocent people like birds. For instance, they recently killed nine
children in  <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunar_Province> Kunar Province
who were collecting firewood. In February this year they killed 65 innocent
villagers, most of them women and children. In this case, as in many others,
Nato claimed that they had only killed insurgents, even though local
authorities acknowledged that the victims were civilians. To prevent the
facts coming out they even arrested two journalists from al-Jazeera who
attempted to visit and report from the site of the massacre.

Successive US officials have said that they will safeguard civilians and
that they will be more careful, but in fact they are only more careful in
their efforts to cover up their crimes and suppress reporting of them. The
US and Nato, along with the office of the UN's assistance mission in
Afghanistan, usually give statistics about civilian deaths that
underestimate the numbers. The reality is that President Obama's so-called
surge has only led to a surge of violence from all sides, and civilian
deaths have increased.

The occupying armies have tried to buy off the families of their victims,
offering $2,000 for each one killed. Afghans' lives are cheap for the US and
Nato, but no matter how much they offer, we don't want their blood money.

Once you know all this, and once you have seen the "kill team" photos, you
will understand more clearly why Afghans have turned against this
occupation. The Karzai regime is more hated than ever: it only rules through
intimidation, corruption, and with the help of the occupying armies. Afghans
deserve much better than this.

However, this does not mean more Afghans are supporting the reactionary
so-called resistance of the Taliban. Instead we are seeing the growth, under
very difficult conditions, of another resistance led by students, women and
the ordinary poor people of Afghanistan. They are taking to the streets to
protest against the massacre of civilians and to demand an end to the war.
Demonstrations like this were recently held in Kabul, Marzar-e-Sharif,
Jalalabad and Farah.

This resistance is inspired by the movements in other countries like Egypt
and Tunisia – we want to see "people power" in Afghanistan as well. And we
need the support and solidarity of people in the Nato countries.

Many new voices are speaking up against this expensive and hypocritical war
in Afghanistan, including soldiers from the Nato armies. When I last visited
the UK I had the honour of meeting  <http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8551245.stm>
Joe Glenton, a conscientious objector who spent months in jail for his
resistance to the war in Afghanistan. Of his time in prison, Glenton said:
"In the current climate I consider it a badge of honour to have served a
prison sentence."

So while the world looks in horror at the "kill team" photographs, Joe
Glenton's courage and humanity is an important reminder that the war in
Afghanistan need not last forever.
