Hola

Jubilee Debt Campaign UK y Eurodad.

Besos

New report: Uncovering
Zimbabwe’s debt: The case for a democratic solution to the
unjust debt burden

<a moz-do-not-send="true"

Please find at the link above a new
report from Jubilee Debt Campaign, Zimbabwe Europe Network and
the European Network on Debt and Development. The report is a
contribution to the work of the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and
Development (ZIMCODD) to expose where Zimbabwe’s debt comes
from, and push for an official audit to be held into the debt.

The report shows how Zimbabwe
inherited unjust debt at independence from Rhodesia. The debt
grew through the 1980s due to drought and loans from foreign
governments and institutions for projects, many of which failed
to provide the investment needed to meet their repayment. In the
1990s bail-out loans were given from the IMF and World Bank to
enable Zimbabwe to meet debt repayments, in return for the
country undergoing structural adjustment. This in turn slowed
economic growth, increased unemployment and created a trade
deficit.

Zimbabwe defaulted on much of its
debt in 2000, but most of the debt originates from loans in the
1980s and 1990s.

International discussions have
begun on dealing with Zimbabwe’s debt. Rather than enter the IMF
and World Bank Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) process,
the report calls for an audit of the debt to find out how loans
did and did not benefit the Zimbabwean people, and to help
prevent the same mistakes being made again.
