Queríamos compartir con vosotras algunas de las últimas notícias sobre
Haití.<br>

Primero, en la web de quien debe a quien encontraréis una carta que nos
han hecho llegar a través de la campaña Internacional Sur-Norte sobre
Deuda Ilegítima, los compañeros de Haití, de plataformas y
organizaciones como PAPDA, miembros de Jubileo Sur y CADTM. La carta

En la web encontraréis también las reacciones de diferentes partidos
políticos y del gobierno español ante la demanda de cancelar la deuda a

son unas declaraciones de Soraya que sólo hemos encontrado en un
períodico electrónico de Alicante, que dice que el Gobierno "estudiará
la condonación de la deuda externa de Haití"

Finalmente, os enviamos en inglés un manifiesto que se ha elaborado a
nivel internacional para denunciar el crédito que el FMI entregó a
Haití la semana pasada. El manifiesto se hará público el próximo
jueves. Si os parece bien podemos añadir la adhesión de Quien debe a
Quien?. Lo traduciremos al castellano lo antes posible ... La adhesión
hay que mandarla mañana como tarde, si a alguien no le parece bien, que
me mande un correo y lo paramos.<br>

the International Monetary Fund has extended $102million loan to </span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Haiti</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
style="font-family: Arial;">, with no mention of debt cancellation. </span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Haiti</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
style="font-family: Arial;"> will now owe the IMF over $250million.<br>

<p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;" class="MsoNormal"><font size="3"><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Hundreds of thousands of activists have
called on their governments in recent days to ensure that substantial
grant aid, rather than loans, is given to </span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Haiti</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
style="font-family: Arial;"> and that all of </span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Haiti</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
style="font-family: Arial;">’s debts are wiped out.<br>

style="font-family: Arial;">Although IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn
had given his support for efforts to “delete all the Haitian debt,
including our new loan" last week, there were no signs of cancellation
at the IMF meeting which took place in </span><st1:place><st1:city><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Washington</span></st1:city><span
style="font-family: Arial;"> </span><st1:state><span
style="font-family: Arial;">DC</span></st1:state></st1:place><span
style="font-family: Arial;"> yesterday. The World Bank (owed
$39million) and Inter-American Development Bank (owed $447million) have
also expressed support for debt cancellation, though have yet to
formally agree a deal. Much of this money was lent at a time when </span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Haiti</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
style="font-family: Arial;"> had massive, odious debts recklessly and
immorally lent to dictatorial regimes. <span> </span><span> </span><span>

style="font-family: Arial;">Only two days after a developing country –
</span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span style="font-family: Arial;">Venezuela</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
style="font-family: Arial;"> – announced it’s intention to cancel </span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Haiti</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
style="font-family: Arial;">’s debt outright, we find in
unconscionable that the IMF, run by the richest countries in the world,
cannot do the same. We are concerned that the Haitian disaster – like
the financial and economic crisis last year – has become another
opportunity for the IMF to extend its operations. This is further proof
of why the IMF should not be involved in development.<br>

style="font-family: Arial;">Moreover, the IMF communication is
misleading in announcing it loans as part of the relief effort that the
international community has mobilised for </span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Haiti</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
style="font-family: Arial;">. Actually the IMF loan will have to be
spent as part of </span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Haiti</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
style="font-family: Arial;">’s current programme with the Fund, which
includes harmful economic and policy conditions which undemocratically
force </span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span
style="font-family: Arial;">Haiti</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
style="font-family: Arial;">, amongst other things, to raise
electricity tariffs and freeze public sector pay. We call on the IMF
and its Board to lift them immediately.<br>

IFIs and the major world powers have<span> </span><span> </span>contributed
to destroying our country. It's the equivalent of an<span> </span>earthquake
which has lasted from late in 1983 when we signed the first<span> </span><span> </span>standby
agreement with the IMF. These loans have caused earthquakes,
aftershocks and shakes which have undermined our institutions and our
capacity to respond to a crisis of<span> </span><span> </span>this
magnitude."<br>
