national-communiste " (le Monde du 26 juin), consacré aux
passerelles idéologiques entre membres du PCF marqués par le
stalinisme et intellectuels proches des thèmes de l'extrême droite,
nous avons reçu d'Alain de Benoist, principal théoricien du GRECE
(Groupement de recherche et d'étude pour la civilisation
européenne), la lettre suivante : 1. Je ne suis pas un intellectuel
d'" extrême droite ". Mes écrits en témoignent tout autant que les
attaques dont je fais régulièrement l'objet dans la presse à
laquelle le même qualificatif est généralement décerné. 2. Je me
suis rendu en Russie en mars 1992. J'y ai rencontré des
personnalités de toutes opinions, parmi lesquelles un certain nombre
de " conservateurs " hostiles à la politique de Boris Eltsine. Tout
en approuvant leur critique du libéralisme occidental, je leur ai
toujours fait part de mon hostilité absolue envers toute forme
d'impérialisme jacobin, de pratique antidémocratique et de
xénophobie. 3. Le journal russe Elementyi est une publication
totalement indépendante du journal français Eléments. Dès la
publication de son premier numéro, j'ai fait retirer mon nom du
comité de patronage, où il avait été imprimé sans mon autorisation.
4. Je n'ai pas à commenter les pratiques promotionnelles d'un
éditeur qui a bien voulu me confier la direction d'une collection.
Il est clair qu'elles ne sauraient m'engager. Mais puisque vous
citez la publication, dans cette collection, d'un recueil d'écrits
du théoricien national-bolchevique Ernst Niekisch, qui fut, sous le
III Reich, l'animateur du mouvement Résistance, j'aimerais signaler
la présence, parmi ces écrits, du célèbre pamphlet anti-hitlérien
Hitler, une fatalité allemande, dont la publication valut à son
auteur d'être condamné sous le régime nazi à la réclusion criminelle
à perpétuité, peine qu'il subit jusqu'à sa libération, en 1945, par
l'Armée rouge. [Alain de Benoist ne conteste aucunement le fond de
notre propos, qui était de souligner l'existence d'une tentation
national-communiste, concrétisée par des relations et des rencontres
entre certains communistes violemment antisocialistes et des
intellectuels inspirant de longue date le courant européen et
élitiste de l'extrême droite, par opposition à sa tendance
nationaliste et populiste. Cette évolution fut illustrée, en 1992,
par deux réunions publiques : un débat de l'Institut de recherches
marxistes sur " Le réveil de la pensée critique ", présidé, le 12
mai, par un membre du bureau politique du PCF, auquel fut convié M.
de Benoist et dont l'Humanité du 14 mai rendit compte (le Monde daté
24-25 mai 1992) ; un débat sur " La recomposition du paysage
intellectuel français ", organisé, une semaine plus tard, le 19 mai,
par la revue du GRECE, Eléments, réunion animée par M. de Benoist et
à laquelle participait Marc Cohen, rédacteur en chef de l'Idiot
international, militant du PCF et responsable du Collectif
communiste des travailleurs des médias.
<P></P>
<P>Dans ses écrits récents, M. de Benoist se dit partisan d'une "
troisième voie " qui incarne " une volonté d'en finir avec l'"
hémiplégie " politico-idéologique en réconciliant les contraires,
c'est-à-dire en associant systématiquement des thèmes " de droite "
et " de gauche " sur la base d'une opposition commune à l'univers du
" centre " représenté par les idées libérales et bourgeoises "
(Eléments, n 70, printemps 1991). Dans la collection qu'il dirige
aux éditions Pardès, il s'attache à réhabiliter les divers courants
de la " révolution conservatrice " allemande qui, avant la victoire
du nazisme, tentèrent, selon son analyse, de " conjuguer libération
nationale et révolution sociale dans une optique identitaire, sans
tomber pour autant dans le biologisme sommaire du racisme nazi
".</P>
<P>S'il refuse d'être classé à l'extrême droite, M. de Benoist n'a
cependant pas refusé d'accorder un entretien au mensuel d'extrême
droite le Choc du mois, publié dans son tout dernier numéro (juin
1993). Il y présente une autre collection qu'il dirige, " Les grands
classiques de l'homme de droite " (Editions des grands classiques),
qui constitue, selon le Choc, " une collection de livres pour
témoigner de la richesse des droites " et dans laquelle figurent,
notamment, des ouvrages de Charles Maurras, Robert Brasillach ou
Abel Bonnard. Le Choc souligne que M. de Benoist est quelqu'un qui "
n'a jamais mis son drapeau dans sa poche ". Celui-ci précise, en
conclusion de l'entretien, qu'il espère pouvoir ouvrir sa
collection, " si elle marche bien, à des auteurs aujourd'hui perdus
de vue, comme Jules Soury par exemple ". Jules Soury est considéré,
par les historiens, comme un des théoriciens français du
racisme.</P>
<P>La place ambiguë de M. de Benoist dans le paysage intellectuel
français a donné lieu à deux études récentes, dont les auteurs
estiment qu'il n'a pas fondamentalement changé par rapport au
théoricien contesté qu'il fut lors des polémiques de la fin des
années 70 sur la nouvelle droite : " Au panthéon de la nouvelle
droite ", par Maurice Olender, l'Histoire, octobre 1992 ; " Alain de
Benoist est-il de gauche ? ", par Alain Bihr, Celsius, janvier
1993.</P>
<P>Dans la notice biographique consacrée à M. de Benoist, la
dernière édition du Who's Who (1992-1993) indique qu'il est membre
du Mouvement anti-utilitariste dans les sciences sociales (MAUSS).
Directeur de la publication du MAUSS, Alain Caillé déclarait, dans
le numéro 13 du troisième trimestre 1991, à l'occasion d'un long
débat avec M. de Benoist : " Il ressort assez clairement, je pense,
que si vous n'êtes plus à droite, c'est uniquement parce que ce qui
est habituellement considéré comme de droite ne vous semble pas
suffisamment à droite. Je vois mal comment on pourrait qualifier une
telle position autrement que d'être d'extrême droite. " En
conclusion de son échange courtois avec M. de Benoist, M. Caillé
indiquait : " Je ne suis plus sûr désormais que le lieu de la
cohérence probable de votre propos soit autre, comme l'opinion
publique vous en soupçonne, que celui d'un fascisme actualisé. "
</P>
<P>Enfin, la revue russe Elementyi, dont nous nous sommes bornés à
constater qu'elle portait le même titre que la revue Eléments du
GRECE, est animée par Alexandre Douguine, auquel M. de Benoist ouvre
parfois ses colonnes (Eléments, n 73, hiver-printemps 1992) et le
GRECE ses colloques. Il n'est pas contestable que M. Douguine se
réclame de la nouvelle droite et des oeuvres de M. de Benoist,
classant parmi les " revues soeurs " en France uniquement les trois
publications animées par ce dernier : Krisis, Eléments, Nouvelle
Ecole. L'étude d'un chercheur du CNRS, Denis Paillard, sur "
L'inquiétante renaissance de l'extrême droite en Russie encouragée
par des activistes occidentaux ", publiée en janvier par le Monde
diplomatique, est, de ce point de vue, très éclairante. _ O. B. et
