Global south countries are facing the heavy burden of debt, undermining 
their ability to address multiple crises and uphold the rights of 
citizens. Many countries are spending more on debt repayments than they 
are on addressing the climate crisis.

Global north governments, corporations and institutions like the IMF and 
World Bank have failed to act. Instead, we have seen the rise of false 
solutions and dangerous distractions that will not solve the debt 
crisis, or worse, could exacerbate it. Meanwhile, wealthy creditors 
continue to profit.

*This is not good enough. *

There are multiple key moments and opportunities this year to take this 
message to decision makers and demand debt justice with global south 
countries. From the Summit on a New Global Financing Pact in Paris, 
*which we know won’t deliver on debt justice*, to COP28, *we will make 
the demand for debt justice heard**. *

We invite all organisations to join us in this demand by signing on to

The statement demands debt cancellation for global south countries, 
including from private creditors, and adequate new and additional 
grant-based climate finance.

This statement will be launched publicly on June 22 (we will reach out 
again to ask for support in social media dissemination). It will be open 
for signatories from now until COP28.
